BAGHDAD — Hundreds of thousands of Shia pilgrims converged on a golden-domed Shia shrine in Baghdad on Sunday (April 23) to commemorate the anniversary of the death of Imam Moussa al-Kadhim, a great-grandson of the Prophet Mohammad who died in the 8th century.

The pilgrims carried a symbolic coffin wrapped in a green cloth and hit their chests as a sign of grief at his death.

Security forces blocked all major roads in Baghdad to protect the pilgrims, many of whom have been making their way on foot to the twin-domed shrine in the northern neighborhood of Kadhimiyah.

Huge religious processions of Iraq's majority Shia sect have in the past been targeted by militants.
