BAGHDAD — Iraqi Muslims flocked to mosques for Eid prayers on Monday (September 12) as authorities adopted tough security measures during the festival.

Worshippers were searched as they entered the Abdul-Qadir al-Gilani mosque in Baghdad ahead of prayers for Eid al-Adha, celebrating the annual haj pilgrimage to Mecca.

Eid al-Adha, or the "Feast of the Sacrifice", commemorates God's gift of a ram to substitute for Abraham's impending sacrifice of his son and is considered the most important holiday in the Islamic calendar.
