SULAIMANI — U.S.-led Coalition forces launched 23 airstrikes against the positions of Islamic State (ISIS) militants near Raqqa while the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) is fighting the militants to liberate the city.

The Coalition forces released a statement on Monday (June 12) saying the warplanes conducted 36 air raids consisting of 64 engagements against ISIS in Iraq and Syria on Sunday (June 11).

The Coalition forces carried out 23 strikes and engaged 20 ISIS tactical units near Raqqa, destroying 16 fighting positions, two vehicles and two boats of the ISIS militants, as well as damaging five supply routes.

Another six airstrikes were conducted near Deir ez-Zor by the Coalition warplanes, destroying six oil tanks and four tanks.

The coalition’s strikes came after the SDF fighters continue advancing to liberate the city of Raqqa from three fronts. 

The SDF forces liberated three neighborhoods in Raqqa city and entered two more on Monday (June 12) since they began operation to liberate the city from the militants on June 6.

The Coalition forces also launched seven airstrikes consisting of 27 engagements against ISIS targets in support of Iraqi army, who is currently fighting ISIS in western Mosul.

The warplanes conducted the airstrikes in Fallujah, Kisik, Tal Afar and Mosul, destroying six fighting positions, a tunnel, two mortar systems and a command and control node.
