SULAIMANI – Iraqi jets dropped millions of leaflets over areas under Islamic State (IS) control Saturday (March 5), warning residents in Mosul, Fallujah and Haditha of impending military operations to drive militants out.

Iraq’s Ministry of Defense announced the pamphlets urged locals to prepare for operations and promised liberation of the areas.

“Iraqi air force planes dropped millions of leaflets which provided guidance to citizens and promised them for the coming end of the Daesh terrorists in Mosul," the ministry’s media department said, referring to IS by an Arabic acronym.

The statement said leaflets were also dropped in Anbar Governorate, where residents were encouraged to wait for operations to defeat IS in western areas.

Iraqi officials are warning residents that any takeover of Mosul and areas inside Nineveh Governorate will take time. Iraqi, Kurdish and Coalition forces have already set up bases around the city of over one million, ahead of planned operations.

No official start date to the operation has been announced.
