SULAIMANI – The Kurdistan Parliament’s speaker said on Tuesday that Kurdish officials will take all measures to prevent a dictatorship in the region.

Speaker Yousif Mohammad met with heads of left-wing Belgian parties as part of a visit to European capitals this week to discuss political developments in the Kurdistan Region.

“We will try to be an obstacle for those creating a dictatorship system in the Kurdistan Region,” Mohammed said.

The Kurdistan Region’s Parliament has been in recess since Mohammed was blocked by security forces from entering Erbil on Oct. 12.

Kurdistan Regional Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani subsequently sacked Change Movement (Gorran) cabinet ministers over what the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) said was Gorran involvement in violent protests that erupted in the region’s eastern towns.

Mohammed, who is also a Gorran member, added, “We have made all efforts to overcome all these obstacles to build democratic institutions.”

Senior Gorran officials said they were willing to negotiate with the KDP to normalize relations, with preconditions, including reinstating cabinet ministers and allowing Mohammed to resume his role in Erbil.

The KDP however has said it will not accept Gorran’s demands as preconditions for talks.
