SULAIMANI – U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson reaffirmed his government’s support for the Peshmerga forces in a phone call with Masoud Barzani.

The Kurdistan Region Presidency (KRP) released a statement on Wednesday (May 31) saying Barzani spoke on the phone with the U.S. official.

According to the statement, Tillerson praised the victory of the Peshmerga forces in the fight against Islamic State (ISIS) militants, and discussed the cooperation between Kurdish forces and the Iraqi Army.

Tillerson promised to continue relations with the Kurdistan Region and support for the Peshmerga forces, the KRP added.

Barzani, for his part, acknowledged U.S. support for the Peshmerga forces in the fight against ISIS, congratulating Tillerson on his inauguration as secretary of state.

The phone call came shortly after Barzani had received a Coalition delegation headed by Stephen Townsend, now in command of Operation Inherent Resolve, in Erbil.

In that meeting Barzani and Townsend had expressed concerns that in a recent operation by the Shia forces to reclaim ISIS-held areas near Sinjar, an agreement between Erbil, Baghdad and the U.S. has been undermined.

They called the military operations in the region “a threat that puts at risk the stability of the liberated areas in the province of Nineveh.”
